The Netherlands’ first Het Gastenhuis private care home for people with dementia opened this month in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. The objective of Het Gastenhuis is to provide people with dementia both daycare and residential care in a small-scale and homey setting, in such a way that they can pursue the life they used to live at home as much as possible. Het Gastenhuis in Dordrecht serves 20 residents.
Caring for someone with dementia is hugely challenging for partners and children, but making the agonising decision to move a loved one to a nursing home is a very difficult and major step. Het Gastenhuis provides a solution. Research has shown that small-scale residential services with a focus on personalised support increases the quality of life for dementia patients. Residents at Het Gastenhuis in Dordrecht are supported by a live-in couple, backed by a permanent team of employees. This ensures that a personal relationship can be established with the residents and their guests and that personal care can truly be facilitated.
Het Gastenhuis offers people with dementia a small-scale home with 24-7 care in the Netherlands. The organisation, which was founded in 2014, is an initiative of Annemieke Bambach and Clasien Schakenraad. Both have many years of experience in developing innovative care concepts for people suffering from conditions such as dementia. Het Gastenhuis in Dordrecht is the first of fifty Het Gastenhuis care homes to be opened, in collaboration with Amvest. Four other homes will be opened in the Dutch towns of Vleuten, Teteringen, Druten and Leusden in 2017.
