Dutch Flower Group wins 2018 Family Business Award | NPM Capital

Dutch Flower Group is the winner of the 2018 Family Business Award. The group is owned by the Van Zijverden and Van Duijn families and encompasses 30 specialised trading companies that together serve the entire floriculture chain. The Dutch Family-Owned Businesses Foundation (Stichting Familie Onderneming) chose Dutch Flower Group as the recipient of this year’s award. The other four finalists were Afas Software, Klokholding, Verstegen Spices & Sauces and Joh. Mourik & Co

The jury, whose membership includes former NPM Capital Managing Director Jan-Willem Baud, commends Dutch Flower Group as a ‘real family business that has achieved tremendous growth internally and is now one of the largest players in its market worldwide. Despite this growth, the company has succeeded in both promoting the participation of its employees and retaining the family culture.’

The fact that Dutch Flower Group invests heavily in sustainability and actively puts its CSR policy into practice also played an important role in the group winning the award. The family-owned business supports a number of good causes and has set up multiple initiatives aimed at improving the living conditions and welfare of the less fortunate.

Supporting Dutch Family Businesses

The Dutch Family-Owned Businesses Foundation (Stichting Familie Onderneming) was established in 2012 by entrepreneur John Fentener from Vlissingen, the Netherlands. The foundation’s objective is to support Dutch family-owned businesses. It presents the annual Family Business Award to an outstanding Dutch family-owned business.

The Foundation is supported in fulfilling this mission by KPMG and ABN AMRO. KPMG independently selects the family-owned businesses based on eight criteria and the prerequisite that the company is genuinely a family-owned business as defined by the European Commission. After the group of finalists has been determined, the jury selects the winning family-owned business. The winner subsequently joins the jury for a period of one year.

Previous winners of the award are Gassan Diamonds (2013), Westland Kaas (2014), Koninklijke De Heus (2015), Enza Zaden (2016) and the Terberg Groep (2017).
