On Saturday 15 December the Van Dobben croquette emerged as the winner in a supermarket taste test conducted by Kassa, the consumer affairs programme produced by VARA. An expert panel headed by the famous pastry chef, Cees Holtkamp from Amsterdam, awarded the Van Dobben croquette 8.3 out of 10, which put it far ahead of the other croquettes. Viewers, who could text their votes live, also thought the Van Dobben croquette was the tastiest, awarding it 7.9 out of 10.
According to Cees Holtkamp, the secret of a good croquette lies in a thin crisp crust. Van Dobben gained the highest score for its crust, which is combined with a plain unctuous ragout. This is exactly what a good diced beef croquette should taste like, said Holtkamp during the television programme about the Van Dobben croquette.
For the people who make the Van Dobben croquettes the result of this latest croquette taste test is a welcome endorsement. “Amsterdam is famous for its croquettes, so we at Van Dobben are carrying on an important tradition,” said Master Croquette Baker, Piet Brink ofRoyaan, the company that makes the Van Dobben croquettes. “I am proud of all our staff: their passion for what they do every day results in the famous Van Dobben quality and flavour, which are anticipated and enjoyed by hundreds of thousands consumers – often on a weekly basis.”
The survey revealed that the Dutch are addicted to croquettes. They eat some 350 million croquettes every year. Mainly for lunch and towards the end of the afternoon.
