Finance professionals use AI extensively, but don't know the rules

Seven in ten finance professionals in the Netherlands are badly or not at all informed about the AI Act – the new European law that determines how artificial intelligence is to be used safely and responsibly. This is according to research conducted by Conclusion among 359 professionals in the financial sector.

That lack of knowledge is in stark contrast to AI's popularity: more than half (52 percent) are using AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot for text and email generation, and 40 percent are using artificial intelligence for customer contact via chatbots. A quarter of respondents even say their organization would struggle without AI. Yet less than a third consider themselves well-informed about how AI works, and 31 percent have never heard of the AI Act.

Although 46 percent of respondents say their organization has an AI policy, a quarter indicate that they do not always adhere to it. More than 10 percent even conceal the use of AI from their employer. Respondents state that only 13 percent of organizations have employees with a high level of AI knowledge.

According to Adil Bohoudi, managing director of Conclusion AI 360, there is a clear task for companies here: “AI is already being used a lot, but without the right frameworks. What feels like freedom now, could soon lead to fines, reputational damage or discontinued applications. Especially in finance, it is crucial to invest in policy, awareness and AI literacy.”
