Bergman Clinics expands its treatment range with hernia repair surgery

Bergman Clinics recently introduced a new treatment method for patients with a lumbar disc herniation. The technique, called PTED, is a surgical procedure performed through a small skin incision, ensuring less tissue damage and faster recovery.

PTED (Percutaneous Transforaminal Endoscopic Discectomy) is intended for people with herniated discs in the lower back. The technique offers advantages over more invasive traditional surgeries, including less postoperative pain and a faster return to work and daily activities.

This treatment method has been used abroad for some time. In the Netherlands, the technique has become more widely known and available as a treatment option following a large-scale study conducted by Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen from 2016 to 2019. The procedure is covered by health insurance under the basic health insurance package, subject to deductibles.

The technique is available at the Bergman Clinics focus clinics in Arnhem, Breda, and Naarden, where patients with radiating neck and back pain can receive planned care. Multidisciplinary teams of neurologists, neurosurgeons, and pain specialists collaborate there on the diagnosis and treatment of herniated discs, slipped vertebral columns, and spinal stenosis.

Patients with acute neurological deficits, oncological back problems, or back pain without radiating symptoms are not eligible for treatment at the clinics. If in doubt about referral, general practitioners can consult with the medical teams at one of the locations.
