UltiMaker introduces secure 3D printers for the Ministry of Defence

NPM participation and 3D printer manufacturer UltiMaker is launching a specially secured version of its S6 and S8 printers. The so-called Secure Line is designed for use in highly secure environments, including the Army, Air Force, and Navy.

The printers are designed to enable the rapid on-site production of parts without relying on vulnerable supply chains. The devices are completely isolated from external networks and operate solely via USB. They also lack Wi-Fi, external cameras, and the ability to connect unauthenticated devices. In this way, UltiMaker aims to minimize the risk of espionage or data theft.

Key security features include tamper-resistant firmware, encrypted file processing, and hardware-secured components. Furthermore, the printers are not connected to the cloud. According to UltiMaker CTO Arjen Dirks, this makes these printers suitable for reliable deployment worldwide, under diverse operational conditions.

Production takes place in Zaltbommel and complies with strict European quality and security standards. UltiMaker supplies the Secure Line in small production runs tailored to the Ministry of Defence's requirements. The company's 3D printing ecosystem has already been used by NATO organizations for the production of components in the field.
