Hendrix Genetics, a leading company in the fields of animal genetics, supported Fish Farm in Dubai to enable salmon farming in this country. 40,000 young salmon have now been transferred to Dubai and the production has started in. As the demand is high, producing salmon in the country means huge gains in food security and sustainability.
Fish Farm LLC is a multi aquaculture species production company, producing sea bass, sea bream, shrimp and grouper. It had the vision to produce Atlantic salmon in Dubai, a difficult problem as naturally occurring freshwater is extremely rare in the desert. 90% or more of the salmon is imported. The journey began back in 2017 when Hendrix Genetics was first approached by Fish Farm. In cooperation with the Hendrix Genetics salmon business in Scotland many brainstorming sessions and trials were organised before finding the solution to provide breeding stock for Fish Farm. Transporting the salmon from Scotland to Dubai was one of the main problems to solve.
Specialized live fish transport tanks were used to transport 40,000 juvenile salmon. Once in Dubai, the salmon was placed in a state of the art recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). These systems help unlock farming opportunities in areas were traditional systems are simply not possible.
